Black Lives Matter
Dear City Club Members and Greater Tacoma Community,
This has been a difficult time for our country and community. We are saddened by the tragic deaths of George Floyd and Manuel Ellis. It is during these turbulent times that we are all called to be catalysts for positive change and voices against injustice.
City Club of Tacoma strongly condemns racist acts of oppression in all forms, including institutionalized racism. We stand in solidarity with those who oppose racism and anti-black violence, and those who call for justice. We stand in solidarity with our African American community members. We affirm that Black lives matter.
City Club of Tacoma's mission is to bring people together to explore issues and ideas affecting the South Sound in the hopes of building a healthy, prosperous, and just community. In the coming months, City Club will host programs discussing and addressing the three crises simultaneously facing America: a public health crisis, inequality exacerbated by COVID-19 which affects people of color disproportionately, and racism. As a civic organization, we acknowledge that it is our duty to work towards dismantling systemic racism and inequity.
In the Gettysburg address, President Lincoln stood on the civil war's biggest battleground and said, "...we must be dedicated to the great task remaining before us." One hundred fifty-seven years later, City Club of Tacoma asks of ourselves and our community to dedicate themselves to the great task remaining before us now.
In solidarity,
City Club of Tacoma Board
