Open Minds Embracing the Future
Mission: To provide a nonpartisan forum that brings people together to explore issues and ideas affecting the South Sound community.
Purpose: To provide a common meeting ground for people of various backgrounds, occupations, and interests to exchange ideas and stimulate intelligent thinking on matters of public interest to our South Sound communities.
Formed in 1984, City Club of Tacoma was patterned after other successful city clubs in the United States, especially those in Portland and Seattle. City Club continues to offer an opportunity for all to learn about current issues of civic interest through twice-monthly meetings that serve as a catalyst for the exchange of ideas.
The club has initiated many important studies that have made been influential in the community, from early looks at the possible development of the Foss waterway to an examination of the delivery of juvenile justice. The most recent study examined the impact of Department of Corrections policies on the city. Community studies have consistently provided an independent and nonpartisan voice in the public policy debate.
City Club’s dinner and luncheon meetings provide an opportunity to get together with other civic-minded people within our community that you may not see at other “networking” events. The club regularly welcomes leaders and dignitaries on issues affecting the arts, business, education, the environment, human services, law and justice, the media, the military, philanthropy, politics, and more. We welcome ideas for program topics, or volunteers for our committees.
City Club meets for dinner on the first Wednesday of each month and for lunch on the third Wednesday. A sole speaker or a panel of speakers addresses the group for about 30 minutes, followed by questions from the audience for another 15–30 minutes (dinner meetings have more time available than lunches), allowing for lively discussion.
The programs are open to the public, but members receive a discounted rate. Programs, including lunch or dinner, cost $23 for members, $30 for nonmembers.
City Club is run by an all-volunteer board and part-time administrator. We welcome you to learn more about the club on this website and to contact us for more information.
