City Club of Tacoma History
City Club of Tacoma was formed in 1984 for people to get together and share ideas and discuss issues of interest in the community. Much research went into putting together a plan for this club. It was patterned after other successful city clubs in the United States, especially those in Portland and Seattle.
City Club of Tacoma was an immediate success with outstanding programs that were interesting and thought-provoking. People from a wide range of occupations and age groups joined.
The club became a place where one could meet new people and share new ideas, a place to learn and form opinions. At the time of formation, City Club also represented something new for women—a place where they could have a voice along with the men in discussing the serious issues of the day. City Club offered a chance for all to participate in an organization that could ultimately make a difference.
Guest speakers have included many state governors, congressmen, and other notable dignitaries. Bill Clinton was one such speaker. He spoke to City Club before announcing his candidacy for the presidency. After the program, some members commented, “Wow, why doesn’t someone like that run for president.” Shortly after that, Clinton announced that he was indeed running for president of the United States.
The Club has initiated many important and vital studies that have made a difference in the community, from early looks at the possible development of the Foss waterway to an examination of the delivery of juvenile justice. The most recent study examines the impact of Department of Corrections policies on the city. Studies have consistently provided an independent and nonpartisan voice in the public policy debate.
City Club of Tacoma has continued to grow and flourish, always reaching out to the community and being involved in current issues. Today membership stands at about 500.
