April 10, 2011 -- SPONSORED: Tacoma Reads: The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind
City Club of Tacoma is proud to be a sponsor of Tacoma Reads Together. This year's book is The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, a non-fiction book written by William Kamkwamba.
William Kamkwamba was 14 years old when he lived through a drought and famine. He watched his friends die. He had no choice but to put his beloved dog out of his misery. He promised himself to do what he could to change his world. And he did. With a small pile of once forgotten textbooks from his village library, scrap metal, a broken bicycle and an armory of determination and curiosity he built a windmill, bringing electricity and running water to his village, forever changing the lives of the people around him.
Kamkwamba will be in Tacoma on Sunday, April 10, to share his story.
