Civic Blogging: Public Discourse and Participation Through Blogs

Landmark Convention Center, 47 St. Helens

In the past half-decade or so, electronic discussion, specifically blogging, has become a mechanism for true public discourse. It invites participation by the lay person who can now engage in open political discourse heard potentially by many others. Kevin Freitas and Derek Young, two of the best-known Tacoma bloggers, will discuss the rise of social media, changing demographics and ways in which the younger generation gets involved, and how to work with or tap into this source of community involvement.

Hot August Night, City Club’s Annual Outing

Wright Park and Karpeles Manuscript Museum

Plans are under way for a picnic-type dinner at the newly renovated Wright Park, to include a visit to the Karpeles Manuscript Museum, one of several branches nationwide that feature extremely rare and important historical documents. The museum normally closes at 4 p.m., but it will be open this evening specially for us.
